West Yellowstone residents and businesses may utilize the Gallatin County transfer station locate 4 miles north of town off Highway 191. In 1970 West Yellowstone began to think about closing its landfill. By 1983 the landfill was capped and the transfer station was built next to it. The 13 acre compound was designed to handle approximately 1,500 tons of waste per year from the Town of West Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding Hebgen Basin region. The approximation currently is close to 6,000 tons per year.
In 1997 “The Greening of Yellowstone” was implemented and plans for a compost facility began to develop. By 2003 the West Yellowstone compost facility opened to the public and composting began.
